![]() ![]() When you create a table of contents in Word, page numbers are automatically added based on the headings you've added to each section. Word's table of contents feature is both flexible and complex it offers a number of options for controlling structure and formatting. ![]() In the Table of Contents Options window, next to each available style you want to use (these are Word's built-in styles that begin with Title, type the level of the table of contents you want to use. In addition to making the document easier to read, a table of contents also makes it easier for the author to go back and add or remove content if necessary. With the table of contents selected, press Shift F9 to display its underlying code, as shown in Figure C. You can use other styles for headings, but you'll have to do more work to generate a table of contents. If you're working in a document that already has a table of contents, you'll find the table of contents styles in use. I'll show you how to modify the table of contents styles-specifically, we'll add some color, but you could apply various formatting. ![]()
